SAM

The Swiss Working Group for Medieval and Modern Archaeology (SAM) brings together specialists in archaeology, art history and history to study the material remains of these periods, brought to light on the territory of present-day Switzerland and neighbouring regions. It promotes the exchange of information between institutions and researchers, as well as with specialists in related disciplines.

The SAM was founded in 1974 and became an association in 1998; it currently has 270 members. Anyone working in the field of medieval or modern archaeology, in the territory of current Switzerland or neighbouring regions, can become a member; they just have to apply and appear before the General Assembly, which decides on their admission. The SAM encourages its members to communicate information about their current work and the results of their research.

In addition to the annual General Assembly, the SAM organises excursions, visits to excavations or exhibitions related to medieval or modern archaeology.
