Swiss Archaeology runs a specialist library for archaeology and houses the archives of the archaeological-historical national documentation (archäologisch-historischen Landesdokumentation) at the location of its central office in Basel.

Archive

The archaeological-historical national documentation (archäologisch-historische Landesdokumentation) was a comprehensive project of the Swiss Society for Prehistory (SGU) from its beginnings until the establishment of the cantonal specialist offices in the 1960s. This archive of national importance contains documents, finds reports and archival records on archaeological sites of all periods in Switzerland, arranged according to cantons and municipalities.

In addition, Swiss Archaeology has kept the archives of the Society since its foundation in 1907. The archives of the Society contain valuable documents on the history of Swiss archaeology.

The library holdings of Swiss Archaeology comprise a geographically and chronologically broad  collection of archaeological specialist literature with a focus on archaeology in Switzerland. The collection is constantly being expanded thanks to exchanges with over 190 institutions in Switzerland and abroad, as well as through donations and purchases.

The library shares its location with the institutional libraries of the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Basel.

The holdings of Swiss Archaeology can be accessed via the Swisscovery catalogue. Holdings owned by Swiss Archaeology start with the signature SGU. Monographs can be borrowed for 28 days with a library card from the University of Basel. Journals and brochures as well as folios and older holdings can only be used on site. Inter-library loans are not available.
