The hill of San Michele, on which stands the medieval fortress of Castel Grande in Bellinzona, was the subject of two preliminary excavation campaigns carried out in 1984 and 1985 in connection with the renovation of the Arsenale, built in 1820.
Under the direction of the then Cantonal Office for Historical Monuments, these investigations revealed the existence of a large depression that had trapped and protected the remains of prehistoric and protohistoric settlements.
Forty years after the excavations, this publication marks a milestone in the study of the documentation and materials discovered: over 3,000 artefacts, mostly pottery and stone tools, and structures dating from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age – Early Iron Age.
The study – coordinated by the Servizio archeologia dell’Ufficio dei beni culturali – and led by Samuel van Willigen, Domenico Lo Vetro, Maruska Federici-Schenardi and Cristian Scapozza is the result of an international team effort, which once again demonstrates just how rich, varied and worthy of promotion the archaeological heritage of the Canton of Ticino is.
